BT to remove Huawei equipment from its core 4G network: Report

Britain's BT Group Plc will remove Huawei Technologies Co's equipment from its core 4G network within two years, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.The move by BT will bring its mobile phone business in line with an internal policy to keep the Chinese company's equipment at the edge of telecoms infrastructure, the paper said.BT has also excluded Huawei from bidding for contracts to supply equipment for use in its core 5G network, it said.However, BT will continue to use Huawei's kit in what it considers to be benign parts of the network, such as equipment on masts, FT said.The Wall Street Journal in November reported that the U.S. government was trying to persuade wireless and internet providers in allied countries to avoid telecommunications equipment from Huawei. Later, New Zealand rejected Huawei's first 5G bid citing national security risk.Earlier this year, Australia too banned Huawei from supplying 5G equipment, also citing security risks.BT and Huawei were not immediately available for comments.

Vodafone Idea Ltd (VIL) has finalised new network equipment supply contracts, with Chinese equipment makers Huawei and ZTEemerging major gainers at the expense of European rivals Nokia and Ericsson as India's largest telco focusses on costs in a bid to realise Rs 14,000 crore worth of annual synergies two years ahead of time.After a tight battle for the overall contract likely worth $1.3-1.4 billion (Rs 9,230-9,940 crore), Finland’s Nokia and Sweden’s Ericsson will collectively meet roughly 65% of Vodafone Idea’s network gear requirements, while the two Chinese vendors will handle the remaining 35%, people familiar with the matter said. Previously, the Europeans met some 80% of the cumulative telecom equipment needs of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular before their merger, which was completed on August 31.The newly-created telco is racing against time to merge its dual network to not just save on costs but also to kick off deepening and expansion of its 4G network and increase capacity as it lags erstwhile market leader Bharti Airtel and latest entrant Reliance Jio, and has consequently been losing subscribers. Vodafone Idea have also said it plans to refarm 2G and 3G spectrum and deploy for 4G. “Vodafone Idea will shortly place purchase orders (POs) with Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei and ZTE for 4G network gear, aggregating roughly $1.3-1.4 billion as nearly 30% of existing equipment will be reused in smaller towns to optimise costs and improve capex efficiency,” one of the people quoted above said.Another person said Vodafone Idea has stepped up gear purchases from Huawei and ZTE as both Chinese network vendors offered more attractive prices and flexibility in payment terms over two to three year-spans unlike Ericsson and Nokia, which had quoted higher rates and sought payments at the point of deployment itself.Nokia and Ericsson though still bagged more circles—nine and eight respectively, to Huawei’s seven and ZTE’s five, all of which were shared with another vendor. Nokia currently provides networks equipment to the combined Vodafone-Idea Cellular entity in 15 circles, followed by Ericsson in 14 circles. Huawei and ZTE supply equipment to VIL in seven and three circles, respectively.In a major win for the Chinese companies, Huawei bagged the latest contracts for both Delhi and Chennai metros, while Ericsson didn’t get a single metro circle. Nokia got Mumbai and Kolkata, and shared the Tamil Nadu circle with Huawei, though it lost out on Chennai. Nokia and Ericsson declined comment while Vodafone Idea, Huawei and ZTE didn’t respond to ET’s emailed queries.Balesh Sharma, chief executive officer of Vodafone Idea, told analysts on Wednesday that the operator had completed its vendor selections for circles and zones. The company, in a presentation, also said it had brought forward by two years to FY21 the annual Rs 14,000-crore run-rate for costs and capex synergies.The latest contracts come as a breather for both Huawei and ZTE who have been facing severe revenue challenges in India due to rapid consolidation in the telecom service provider market, besides facing headwinds in some global markets due to security concerns. Both these vendors have got more circles than previously estimated, due to the mobile phone operator’s focus on keeping costs in check, another person said. "While initially, Vodafone Idea was veering towards the European vendors, Idea’s previous experiences with the Chinese players, especially in terms of running a tight ship, tilted the scales," the person said.The company is facing intense financial pressure. Vodafone Idea posted a loss of Rs 4,974 crore and an earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation margin of 8.1% for the quarter ended September, raising concerns about its ability to service debt that has ballooned to more than Rs 1.15 lakh crore.Rohan Dhamija, partner and head of India & Middle East at Analysys Mason, said Vodafone Idea could have thought about giving more circles to fewer vendors to get bigger volume discounts, which would have helped them in financially turbulent times."However, the decision could be driven by the complexity of the two merged networks, hence the need for enrolling specific vendors in specific circles."

Qualcomm has revealed that its Quick Charge technology is now at the core of more than 1000 mobile devices, accessories and controllers.After four generations, the Quick Charge technology’s growing ecosystem consists of more than 200 compatible mobile devices, 700 accessories and 100 controllers. On the device side this ecosystem means consumers have greater fast charging options when choosing their next smartphone, VR headset, wireless speaker, camera, power bank and more. For charging accessories, consumers have a variety of wall and car chargers, battery banks, USB hubs, and others to choose from.“Consumers continue to demand more and more battery life out of their devices. When it’s time to recharge, Qualcomm Quick Charge technology can charge almost any mobile device whether it supports Quick Charge or not,”said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile, Qualcomm.On the mobile device side, Qualcomm Technologies’ latest fast charging solution, Quick Charge 4+, includes improved Dual Charge, intelligent thermal balancing and additional layers of advanced safety features. Quick Charge 4 is designed to provide a superior charging solution by delivering up to 50% power charge in roughly 15 minutes or less (Qualcomm notes that actual results may vary depending on device design). With these new features incorporated into a device and the charger, Quick Charge 4+ can charge up to 15% faster or 30% more efficiently than Quick Charge 4.Through further advancements in the method for delivering power, Qualcomm says mobile devices that employ Quick Charge with Dual Charge technology can reach up to 97% efficiency, which translates to less power being lost during the charging process, energy savings and reduction of the heat generated within the device. Additionally, Quick Charge 4+ now incorporates a new battery sensing technology that directly measures the voltage of the battery cell and allows the system to have a more accurate view of the battery’s current state, so they can stay in high current charging for longer, in order to further reduce charge times.Quick Charge 4+ also supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD) as its primary signaling method, allowing it to offer a “one charging solution for all” experience. This means that chargers equipped with Quick Charge 4+ are designed to enable devices to be charged with or without Quick Charge technology or Qualcomm Snapdragon architecture inside them.

Qualcomm has announced what it says is the industry’s first qualified, end-to-end, Bluetooth, Smart Headset reference design featuring push-button activation support for Alexa for users of Android phones with the Alexa app.Based on Qualcomm family of Bluetooth audio chips (QCC5100-series), the company says the reference design includes virtually all the key hardware and software required for manufacturers to help them develop advanced Bluetooth headsets more efficiently and cost-effectively. In addition to support for Alexa, the solution also supports ultra-low power consumption for extended playback time and battery life, as well as Qualcomm cVc noise reduction technology designed for superior audio and voice service capabilities. Manufacturers can also add support for active noise cancellation and Qualcomm aptX HD high-resolution wireless audio.The Qualcomm Smart Headset Development Kit is the first Bluetooth Smart Headset reference design built with support for the Alexa Mobile Accessory Kit, a protocol that runs over Bluetooth, and is designed to allow users to easily connect Bluetooth-enabled audio devices with Alexa via the Alexa app. This means device makers no longer need to oversee the bulk of coding for their Alexa integration or to add any communication hardware beyond Bluetooth, which helps to reduce cost and accelerates development time.“Our consumer research shows that four out of five consumers have embraced voice services, but the vast majority are also looking for superb audio quality. The SoC family is also engineered to support concurrent software operation, meaning that users can transition smoothly between functions such as listening to music, making calls, running biometric sensors and using voice services.
