Siemens and Synopsys settle Mentor Graphics patent litigation and team up to expand and extend EDA collaboration

Siemens PLM Software and Synopsys have agreed to work together, settling their five-years of patent quarrels between Synopsys and Mentor Graphics.The settlement includes mutual seven-year patent cross-licenses between Synopsys and Siemens, and between Synopsys and Mentor Graphics.The partnership will see the two collaborate on electronic design automation (EDA) product interoperability projects for the benefit of their mutual customers, spanning a number of EDA domains from design to verification.“With the increasing complexity in electronics driven by AI, automotive, industrial and other high-impact markets, semiconductor and systems companies are grappling with design challenges from the roots of silicon all the way up to the application software,” said Aart de Geus, chairman and co-CEO of Synopsys. “We look forward to working with Siemens to provide increasingly powerful EDA and related solutions to our mutual customers.”“Our customers are rapidly adopting electronic design automation as part of their digitalisation strategy. Interoperability is a critical aspect of enabling customers not only in EDA but in the broader context of system development,” stated Tony Hemmelgarn, CEO of Siemens PLM Software. “Siemens is very committed to EDA and we are looking forward to our interoperability partnership with Synopsys.”

Synopsys Settles with Mentor, Agrees to Collaboration

EDA heavyweights Synopsys and Mentor Graphics agreed to settle a long-running emulation patent litigation as part of a collaboration deal between Synopsys and Mentor's parent company, Siemens PLM Software.The settlement agreement includes a seven-year patent cross-licensing agreement between Synopsys and Mentor. It presumably brings to an end a long-running battle over emulation technology that began between Mentor and EVE SA, a French emulation firm that Synopsys acquired in 2012. As recently as last year, an appeals court upheld a  $36 million jury verdict in favor of Mentor in the case.More broadly, the deal between Synopsys and Siemens includes collaboration on a range of EDA product interoperability projects for the benefit of mutual customers, spanning applications from design to verification.“With the increasing complexity in electronics driven by AI, automotive, industrial and other high-impact markets, semiconductor and systems companies are grappling with design challenges from the roots of silicon all the way up to the application software,” said Aart de Geus, Synopsys chairman and co-CEO, in a press statement."Interoperability is a critical aspect of enabling customers not only in EDA but in the broader context of system development,” said Tony Hemmelgarn, CEO of Siemens PLM Software.

Siemens Lays Out Vision for Mentor

　　When Siemens AG agreed last November to buy Mentor Graphics Corp. for $4.5 billion, it wasn't the first time that the German conglomerate had entertained the idea of swallowing the Portland, Ore.-based EDA software vendor.　　Turns out that the two companies had had what executives termed a "fly by" some nine years before. When rival Cadence Design Systems Inc. launched a hostile takeover attempt of Mentor in 2008, Siemens was one of several potential white knight acquirers that CEO Walden Rhines reached out to.　　Rhines gave a presentation to Chuck Grindstaff, then chief technical officer of Siemens PLM Software. Siemens ultimately passed on the opportunity and Cadence eventually withdrew its acquisition offer Mentor's board failed to cooperate and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission indicated it would be taking a hard look at the deal.　　But even before the "fly by," Grindstaff, now the executive chairman at Siemens PLM, had envisioned the integration of a software company that specialized in electronic design and his firm, which mainly provides software for product lifecycle management and manufacturing operations.　　"This idea of putting two companies like us together has been in my head for 20 years," Grindstaff said during an interview with trade press editors at the Design Automation Conference (DAC) here Tuesday (June 20). He added that it was just a matter of waiting for the technologies to evolve to the point where the disruption in the marketplace caused by such a deal would be manageable compared with what could be gained from the synergies involved.　　During the meeting with the press and a keynote address earlier in the morning, Grindstaff made a persuasive case for the combination of the two firms at a time when Siemens PLM customers—mostly system vendors from across various industies—are increasingly designing their own chips for inclusion in their products.
