Nidec Develops New Automotive Air Suspension Motor
Nidec Corporation (TSE: 6594; OTC US: NJDCY) (the “Company”) today announced that Nidec Motor (Dalian) Limited (“Nidec Motor (Dalian)”), a corporation that the Company owns in China, has developed a new air suspension motor for automobiles. By utilizing its long-nurtured technologies for brake and power steering motors and other drivetrain products, Nidec Motor (Dalian) has developed this latest air suspension motor. Compact, durable, and highly responsive during start-up, this product drives the air compressor, the component that supplies the air tank with compressed air. Conventional suspension systems use a coil spring to absorb vibration and shock just to keep a car from swaying. Air suspension systems, on the other hand, can fine-adjust the car’s height with pneumatic pressure. This feature not only improves the car’s passenger comfort, it also improves the car’s driving performance based on running circumstances as well. For example, air suspension systems lower the car’s height during high-speed running to reduce air resistance, while increasing the car’s height during off-road running to enhance its ground-covering performance. Main features: 1. It’s compact: With the ultimate-level torque, the motor is compact enough to be installed in a limited space. The strong magnetic structure guarantees this compact and efficient motor’s excellent performance. 2. It’s long-life: The brushless design of this motor makes it a durable product. With the use of electronic commutation, this motor better reduces risks of defacement of commutators and mechanical trouble, and secures a longer life, than its brushed counterparts. 3. It starts and responds quickly: The use of electronic commutation enables the motor to start and drive the compressor quickly, and to secure less start-up friction and better power-up responsiveness than its brushed counterparts. As the world’s leading comprehensive motor manufacturer, Nidec stays committed to utilizing its technologies to make light, thin, short, and small products, technologies to improve efficiency, and technologies to secure high-level control, to propose revolutionary solutions that contribute to the evolution of automobiles. Nidec to Expand Its Production Capacity for Water-cooling Modules
Nidec Corporation (TSE: 6594; OTC US: NJDCY) (“Nidec” or the “Company”) today announced that it will enhance its CDU (Coolant Distribution Unit) production line in Thailand, the Company’s manufacturing base for water-cooling modules for servers, to increase the factory’s monthly CDU production capacity from 200 to 2,000 units by June 2024. Nidec’s water-cooling module The CDU production capacity expansion is in response to the adoption by Supermicro, an American AI server manufacturer. The jointly developed with Supermicro 100 to 250 kW products will be manufactured at the Ayutthaya Plant in Thailand, where the existing line has been expanded. So far, the fan-based air-cooling method has mainly been employed for computing servers in data centers, research institutes, and other similar facilities. However, in AI, the market expected to grow going forward, semiconductor-based arithmetic units (CPUs and GPUs) that utilize AI to process learning information with big data generate significantly more heat than their predecessors. Thus, as the air-cooling method, which relies on air-conditioning equipment, is insufficient to cool a myriad of servers lined up in a building. This is why the water-cooling system, whose cooling capability is far superior to the air-cooling system’s, is expected to become indispensable in the future. As the water-cooling module market is forecast to continue its growth, Nidec intends to expand its monthly CDU production capacity to more than 3,000 units in the future, while expecting the size of related products’ markets to be 10 billion yen in FY2023, and more than 80 billion yen in FY2024. Nidec’s cooling systems employ a liquid-to-liquid method, where cooling modules installed in each server supply cooling water via metal pipes to directly cool each server’s computing devices. The systems comprise a CDU (coolant distribution unit), a cooling water distributor; a CDM (coolant distribution manifold), a cooling water piping; and an LCM (liquid cooling module), a water-cooling module. The aforementioned product features the redundancy of its pumps, electricity sources, circuit substrates, and other important units, which are all in pairs to improve the system’s reliability. Additionally, those units are replaceable even during maintenance, without stopping its cooling system, to keep the server operating (a hot-swap functionality). To contribute to the development of the world’s AI, Nidec stays committed to working as a comprehensive thermal solution manufacturer to provide products that perfectly reflect people’s needs. By offering proposals a step ahead of the competition, and with an enhanced lineup of its high-reliability products, Nidec presses ahead to become a market leader.

Nidec Machine Tool Develops World-first Polish (Grinding) Method to Process Internal Gears for Mass-production
Nidec Machine Tool Corporation (“Nidec Machine Tool” or the “Company”), a group company of Nidec Corporation, today announced that it has developed the world’s first high-accuracy polishing (grinding) method to machine internal gears for mass production that are used for automobiles’ drive units and transmissions and for robots’ joints. While there are already high-accuracy polish-machining methods for external gears for mass-production, no such methods have been available for internal gears. After conducting research focused on this point, the Company has achieved positive results to secure the level of accuracy and production that conventional grinding, honing, or skiving methods could not. Though the planetary gear mechanism boasts such merits as high efficiency, high load capacity, and compactness, gears used in the mechanism are required to be high-quality, as even a slight distortion in the gears as the mechanism’s components affects the durability and transmission efficiency, and may cause noise and vibration. As a growing number of products become electrified and automated, and as the needs for highprecision gears increase accordingly, the Company has realized this new machining method fast, and release it to contribute to improving gears’ durability, transmission efficiency, and NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) performance. This latest R&D project identified and derived machining conditions based on Nidec Machine Tool’s processing machines and technologies. This project is part of the joint research with Germany’s RWTH Aachen University. For more details on the project, please see the attached paper. Processing machine: The Company used ZI20A, the grinding machine that it used its unique technology and launched in 2009 for internal gears for mass production. This machine can process internal gears with high precision to the degree of productivity required for their mass production. Selection of grinding stones for polishing: The Company selected grinding stones, which are consumables, based on its preliminary assessment of their availability, economic efficiency, and suitability for autonomous driving. Specifying machining conditions: By targeting Ra0.1µm and Rz1.0µm or less (a general surface roughness index for polish machining), the Company derived high-efficiency machining conditions that would maintain the post-polish gear accuracy of ISO levels 3 - 5, while preventing grinding burn. With its world-leading gear-machining technology, Nidec Machine Tool provides machines, tools, and machining solutions to stay committed to contributing to solving social issues.
